Let's Talk Iced Coffee: Savor or Dilute?

Let's Talk Iced Coffee: Savor or Dilute?

Being able to prepare your own cup of coffee is a satisfaction that everybody deserves. With that comes the need for balance which has to be present in every iced coffee. Even the subtlest details can make a significant impact on the overall taste experience. Before we get into the science of dilution and the flavor profile of coffee, grab your favorite brew (we are drinking Cometeer over a Klaris cube with some Oatley milk!) and join us as we explore the intriguing science behind the melting ice dilemma.

Melting of Ice

When ice cubes meet a scorching cup of coffee or a hot summer day, an inevitable process unfolds - melting of ice. The rate at which ice cubes melt directly impacts the coffee's taste due to dilution. Faster melting ice cubes introduce more water content into the cup, leading to a milder flavor profile and reduced intensity. Drinking watered down coffee isn’t a pleasant experience, which is why Klaris cubes are the perfect solution.

Factors Affecting Dilution

Dilution in an iced coffee can be influenced by two key factors: the temperature of the liquid and the surface area to volume ratio of the ice. Introducing a hotter liquid to ice will result in faster melting and more dilution. Using cold brew or chilling espresso in the refrigerator can provide more longevity to the drink. Additionally, the ratio of surface area to volume of ice affect the rate of melt and dilution so smaller ice cubes (higher surface area to volume ratio) lead to faster dilution. On the other hand we have Klaris cubes and/or craft ice (lower surface area to volume ratio) which provide a slower melting process. We do know that some may prefer smaller cubes for chewing or even for its texture but we believe that larger cubes retain the profile of the drink for a longer period.

Craft Ice In Coffee

It's surprising that craft ice hasn't made a bigger appearance in the coffee game. While it may not be as aesthetically pleasing, craft ice is an excellent option for those who want to enjoy their iced coffee without compromising on flavor. We know a coffee lover's worst nightmare is when you're halfway through a cold drink on a scorching hot summer day, only to realize it's completely watered down and now you're tossing the drink because it no longer tastes good. We've all experienced this disappointment, and that's why we emphasize the importance of finding the right balance to avoid such situations. Klaris cubes ensures that you can confidently savor your iced coffee without worrying about dilution or the risk of your precious beverage melting away before you get a chance to enjoy it.
